How to Commission your own Unique Piece of Jewelry

Family Crest Cufflinks

As you may already know from our website, we offer a custom jewelry service. The beauty of creating your own custom made piece is that it gives you the opportunity to have a truly unique piece of jewellery, while giving me the chance to translate your ideas into precious metals.

So, rather than simply explaining the pieces I have made, I thought I would show you a selection of pieces I have created based on our customers ideas. As one of our most popular custom pieces are personalised men’s cufflinks, I decided to begin with these.

All of our pieces start as enquiries that come through to me via the custom jewellery page on our website. We have a simple enquiry form that you can fill in with as little or as much information as you wish. I design and handcraft everything, from silver pendants to 18ct gold Celtic and Claddagh wedding rings.

One of my favourite bespoke pieces of men’s jewellery that I have created in recent years are these contemporary Claddagh cufflinks. They were based on an existing Claddagh cufflinks design from my online collection but made in sterling silver and solid 18ct gold.

This second set of cufflinks are a perfect example of how the process works. This customer got in touch with me about creating a pair of personalised silver cufflinks.

We discussed the different design and pricing options over email. I was able to offer suggestions on various shapes the cufflinks could take and how the chosen design would work best.

This customer wanted to incorporate nautical signal flags to spell out their initials, which held personal significance for them.

I loved this idea, not only were the nautical flags meaningful to the wearer but they also made for a truly unique custom design.

Based on this brief, I started sketching some ideas so both the customer and I could have a clear vision of the finished piece. Once we finalised the design, I began cutting, filing, soldering, and polishing to bring the piece to life.

My final custom jewellery highlight is this Ballybunion Castle tie pin. Since the castle is only a few miles from where I grew up, it’s always special to be able to etch it into silver.

Sometimes we’re presented with a real challenge, like this piece we made for a customer who wanted a brooch inspired by the Tara Brooch, inset with diamonds and emeralds.

That's just a few of the many lovely custom jewellery pieces we have made this month.
